2011 Wild Cook-Off Rules
Cook it Here!
Any and all meat or main dishes that are entered into the judging must be cooked from scratch and within the constraints of the event. Pre-cooking, marinating, etc., will not be allowed prior to the start of the cook-off. Sauce: You may cook with sauce, but additional sauce may not be added once the meat is prepared for the judging.
Make it Look Nice!
Each entry will be judged on its presentation to the judges. Garnishment is allowed. Dishes may be presented to the judges in your own creative way, using your own dishes, platters, bowls, etc. Presentation will be considered in the judging. In addition, your tables and booths may be decorated.
Keep it Clean!
Cooks are to prepare and cook in as sanitary a manner as possible. Cooking conditions are subject to inspection by the judging committee. Precautions MUST be made to prevent fire threat.
No Selling!
No participants of the Cook-Off are allowed to sell their food due to health department regulations. United Way will provide sample containers and utensils for visitors to sample your work.
Cooking Categories: Barbecue, Cajun and Wild Game
Your entry will be judged on flavor, freshness, appropriate seasoning, presentation, creativity and overall satisfaction!
Judging
Roast, Brisket, Deer etc. – three (3) full slices, approximately 1/4inch thick
Ribs – three (3) cut ribs, 1/2rack, or full rack
Chicken, Duck etc. – ˝ full jointed, breast portions
Gumbo, Jambalaya, etc – ˝ cup minimum
Presentation Time
The Head Judge and United Way will pre-set firm times for each category to be judged. Once the time is set and announced to contestants, no change or variation will be made.
Access to Site
The competitors can enter the Cook Off site as early as 8:00am. Sites are assigned as registrations came into the United Way office. Covered spaces on the Levee are assigned on a first come basis. Unsheltered groups may provide their own tents or cover. You will be will be given your site location the week before the event. When you come in, you will be given your assigned number for each entry. Each team receives 5 APRONS at registration; additional aprons will be available for purchase on a limited basis.
People’s Choice Award
Each team will receive a jar with its name displayed on the front. Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite entries by putting money in the appropriate jar. At the end of the day, the team who has collected the most money will be awarded the “People’s Choice Award.” Team members are allowed to vote for themselves. All funds will be counted toward the United Way campaign.
